The Summer Bag Everyone Is Surprised By

One of the comments I hear again and again from customers discovering my handmade Madagascan baskets for the first time is always the same:
“I can’t believe how light it is!”
Despite their generous size and sturdy appearance, these colourful raffia baskets are incredibly lightweight to carry. In fact, the small baskets weigh around 300g — about the same as a paperback novel — whilst the medium baskets come in at approximately 400g, roughly the weight of a lightweight cardigan or two smartphones.
It is one of the reasons people end up using them far more than they ever expected.
Originally bought as a cheerful summer accessory or holiday basket, they quickly become the bag ladies reach for all season long. Perfect for afternoons out, shopping trips, holidays and weekends away. They somehow manage to combine the practicality of a tote bag with the joyful personality of a handmade artisan accessory.
Personally, I use mine constantly from spring through to autumn. If I am heading into town, going out for the afternoon or travelling, a basket nearly always comes with me. I often describe them as the perfect hybrid bag being a lovely mix of handbag and shopping bag — roomy enough for the practical things like my purse, sunglasses and a water bottle, whilst still leaving space for those extra bits and pieces you inevitably collect throughout the day.
One of the features customers particularly love is the drawstring top hidden inside the basket. It is such a simple detail, but it makes these baskets incredibly practical for everyday life and travel.
If you are heading to the beach or pool, you can throw in sunglasses, sun cream, a book, snacks and a water bottle without worrying about everything spilling out. Going away for the weekend? The drawstring gives you that little bit of extra flexibility we all seem to need when travelling. I regularly squeeze a cardigan into the top of mine on flights and can still pull the drawstring closed to keep everything safely together.
The baskets are also surprisingly comfortable to use throughout the day because they are so lightweight. Unlike heavier bags that seem to get more uncomfortable with every hour, these are easy to carry whether you are wandering around shops, exploring a market or heading out for lunch with friends.
Another thing I personally love is the wide open shape and the fact they stand upright independently. It sounds like such a small thing, but it makes them wonderfully easy to live with. Tuck your basket beside your chair at a café, sit it at your feet during an event or place it beside your sun lounger, everything remains easy to reach without endlessly rummaging around inside your bag.
Of course, practicality alone would not explain why people become so attached to them. I think a huge part of the appeal is simply how cheerful they are. The bright colours, embroidered details and handwoven textures instantly feel like summer. Even on an ordinary day, carrying one somehow makes life feel a little more relaxed and joyful.
Each basket is handwoven in Madagascar using traditional raffia weaving techniques passed down through generations, which means no two are ever completely identical. Slight variations in colour, shape and weave are all part of their charm and individuality.
Over the years I have watched customers buy these baskets for holidays, only to discover they end up using them all summer long — for shopping trips, lunches out, garden centre visits, weekends away and all those in-between days where you need something practical but still want to feel stylish.
I think that is why they remain one of my favourite things to stock at Sassy Spirit. They are colourful, practical, lightweight, cheerful and surprisingly versatile. The kind of bag that quietly becomes part of your everyday life without you ever really planning it.
So perhaps the real surprise is not just how light these Madagascan baskets are to carry — but how often you find yourself reaching for one.
The summer bag everyone is surprised by.
